Help Equip the New Sports Medicine Building! Buy a Brick!

McNeese has a brand new SportsMedicine Building, The Dowell "Doc" Fontenot Sports Medicine Center, that opened this year which has been hailed as one of the best university sports medicine facilities in the state. Much of the funding (between $150,000 and $180,000) for construction of the building was raised and donated by the Petrochemical Athletic Association. The new building has tremendously increased the space that McNeese Trainer Doc Murphy has to treat McNeese's athletes compared to the small area used in the McNeese Field House in the past. With the new larger building, the next problem was finding money to purchase equipment for the new building.

So far about $47,000 dollars has been raised from various means. $18,000 was raised and donated by the McNeese Cowboy Club from the Sports Auction they held last year. Another $10,000 was raised by a benefit golf tournament which will become an annual event and is billed as the "Ice, Tape, and Whirlpool Open". The remainder of the money was from private donations.

To raise more money for equipment, Trainer Doc Murphy and staff are selling commemoratory bricks to be placed in a courtyard constructed next to the new building. The courtyard will be constructed between the stadium flagpole and the new sports medicine building. On the bricks will be etched the names of the purchaser, or if an ex-athlete, their name, number, years participated, etc. Bricks will be sold for $100 per brick and 3 lines of up to 14 characters each can be etched into the bricks. Only one name per brick is allowed. If anyone is interested in purchasing a brick, they can contact Dr. Murphy or the Athletics Office at 337-475-5215. All monies donated to this fundraiser will go towards the purchase of equpment for the new training room.

Below are a few pictures of the new sports medicine facility and Dr. Murphy. First, Doc Murphy at his desk in his office in the new building.

Here is an example of the bricks that will laid down in the courtyard.

Here is the area where the courtyard will be constructed and the bricks laid. It is the grassy area between where the flagpole is and the sidewalk in the foreground. It is estimated that they will have room for between 1400-1500 bricks in this area.

Here are a few shots of the new and very large rehabilitation room.
