Bank One Baseball Classic

Bank One Classic: McNeese vs Louisiana Monroe

McNeese took on La-Monroe Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Bank One Classic. In the earlier game, Southern Mississippi beat Nebraska, so if McNeese could beat ULM they would be tied with USM and Nebraska at 2-1 for the tournament. The tiebreaker in that case would be total runs scored in all three games.

Starting on the mound for McNeese was Rusty Begnauc. Rusty gave up three hits and struck out seven batters in six innings of work and got the win. Seth LaStrapes came in and, despite a little control problem in his first inning, pitched three innings of no-hit baseball to get a save.

A lot of Cowboys had good days at the plate. Dooley Prince had three triples and Josh Fontenot went three for three with two RBI's and three runs scored. Also having multiple hit games were Ran Prince, P. J. Johnston, and Brian Bernhardt

The Cowboys won and scored enough runs to win the tiebreaker and earn the Bank One Classic championship trophy.

Bank One Classic: McNeese vs Southern Miss

I made it to about four innings of the baseball game with Southern Miss before having to head to Burton Coliseum for the basketball game with Sam Houston. When I left the game, the score was 4-3 in the top of the 5th inning. McNeese came back to win the game 9-7. Jared Gothreaux ,who pitched well in relief of Craig Martel, who started the game, got the win in relief. P. J. Johnston led McNeese in hitting going three for three with a single, triple and a two run homer. Below are links to my pictures of the game:

Bank One Classic: McNeese vs Nebraska

I made it over to the first day of the Bank One Lake Area Classic Friday. I caught a little of the Louisiana-Monroe vs Southern Miss baseball game which was won by Southern Miss. Then I took in the Nebraska-McNeese game. The start of the game was delayed thirty minutes because an Entergy transformer fuse on a pole out by the road blew when the lights were first turned on. It took a little while to get an Entergy truck there and get the fuse changed.

In the game, the Nebraska starter, Shane Komine was dominating. He gave up only one hit in 8 innings of work. That was a double by McNeese rightfielder Jesse Cassard. Lane McKeller matched Komine through five innings but gave up a solo homerun in the 6th inning. The 7th inning was a disaster for McNeese. Two or three errors coupled with a few hits and the Cornhuskers had a five run inning and a 6-0 lead. McNeese went through two or three relief pitchers. Nebraska scored three runs in the top of the 9th to stretch their lead to 9-0. Komine was replaced by Jeff Blaesing to start the bottom of the 9th. Blaesing suffered control problems and loaded the bases with a combination of walks and hit batsmen. With the bases loaded Tommy Eubanks hit a pitch over the right field wall for a grand slam. It was McNeese's second and final hit of the game as the final score ended up being 9-4.

McNeese takes on Southern Miss at 5 PM on Saturday. There was a good crowd for Friday's game, even though it was a little cool. The main grandstands were full. It will be nice and sunny today, so come out and catch the game before heading to Burton Coliseum and the basketball game.
