2003 Baseball Season

McNeese vs Delaware St. Baseball Series, Game 1

I made it out to Cowboy Diamond Friday night for the first game of the 2003 season against Delaware St. I was surprised to find a nice sized and very vocal crowd at the game. It was one of the first times that I remember cow bells out at a baseball game.

The pitching was excellent for this game, the defense could have been better with a few errors made, and the offense was good against a very good Delaware St. pitcher. Delaware St. is a very good team having won forty games last season and is projected to win the MEAC conference again this year.

McNeese vs Delaware St. Baseball Series, Game 2

Saturday's game with Delaware St. ended up being an offensive explosion with the Pokes winning 23-10. McNeese had four homeruns in the game and had a McNeese school record 26 hits in the game. Rusty Begnaud had a good five innings. True Freshman Chris Denton had a shaky first inning of his career. The other relievers did okay but were a little erratic with their control at times.

McNeese vs Delaware St. Baseball Series, Game 3

I made it out to Cowboy Diamond on a beautiful Sunday afternoon to catch the last game of the McNeese-Delaware St. series. John Doerfler was on the mound and got the win giving up four runs on sixth hits and striking out six. He left the game with a 17-4 lead. The bullpen let the Hornets come back to within 18-13 giving up a big 7 run 8th inning before Walt Nolan came in and put out the fire. The Pokes ended up winning the game 19-16 completing the sweep of the series.

McNeese vs Grambling St.

I made it out to a cold Cowboy Diamond to watch the first game of the Grambling series Saturday. The Sunday game was ranned out after two innings. The Pokes scored three runs in the bottom of the 5th and made that hold up for a 3-0 win. I stayed until the bottom of the sixth, when I decided to head to Burton Coliseum and gets some pictures of the women's basketball game with SFA and to thaw out.

McNeese vs La Tech.

I made it out to the baseball game Tuesday night with La. Tech. A little late because of a Cowboy Club meeting before. When I got there, the Pokes were up 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning. The Pokes added one or two runs every inning up to the bottom of the 7th, when I had to leave, to take a 11-1 lead. That ended up being the final score. Kyle Bateman pitched the first three innings, Walt Nolan the next three, and Joey Porrier, Chris Denton, and Ronnie Baron, one each. They combined for a two hitter for the whole game. Kyle Bateman was awarded the win. Dooley Prince had three hits, while Tommy Eubanks, Brian Bernhardt, and Josh Fontenot all had two hits.

UL Lafayette Mardi Gras Tournament

I made it over to Lafayette this weekend to catch McNeese last two games in the University of Louisiana Lafayette's Mardi Gras Baseball Tournament. The Friday night before McNeese had beaten Wichita St. 4-3 on Friday night. I got there early on both Saturday and Sunday and visited with Chris Verrett, a McNeese alumnus, who lives and practices in Lafayette, and the group of McNeese fans who were camping in the parking lot west of the football stadium. Camping were Jerry Stephens, Kenny Cochran, Frank Landry, Danny Friesner, and a couple of others along with their wives. On Saturday in a good game with Ohio St., the Pokes came through with a 5-3 win. On Sunday afternoon, in some beautiful baseball weather, they played a very exciting 10 inning game with the host team, Louisiana Lafayette. It was a very enjoyable weekend for the McNeese fans that made it over there. I just enjoyed the Saturday game and on Sunday I took a few pictures. Below, are some links to pictures of the Sunday game:

Bank One Lake Area Classic

I made it out to Cowboy Diamond to see parts of McNeese's three games in the Bank One Lake Area Classic. I took some pictures of the Friday and Saturday games. I went to the Sunday game but decided that I didn't feel like taking any pictures. I sat out in the Cowboy Corral and just enjoyed watching the game.

In the Friday and Saturday games, we just couldn't get the timely hit when we needed it. We had our chances in both games but just couldn't get it done. We lost the first game to Georgia 8-5 and the second game to Oral Roberts 4-2. In the Sunday game, freshman Chris Denton pitched a great game giving up three hits in 8 full innings of work. He was keeping the ball down and hitting his spots like he did in his high school career at Barbe. And the bats woke up as we collected 16 hits in an 8-3 win over South Alabama. South Alabama was 2-0 in the tournament going into the game and ended up being tied at 2-1 for the tournament with Georgia. They won the trophy because they beat Georgia head to head on the second day.

Below, is a link to what little pictures I took of McNeese games with Georgia on Friday night and Oral Roberts. I left the Oral Roberts game early to head out to Burton Coliseum for the basketball game.

McNeese vs Arkansas State, Game 3

I made it out to the third game of the McNeese-Arkansas St. Series. It was an ugly game for the Pokes. They hit the ball where the Indians were and the Indian hits seem to find the holes. The pitching was spotty and the Pokes seemed a little flat committing many physical and mental errors. There were also a lot of passed balls and/or wild pitches. The final score of the game was Indians 9 Pokes 3.

McNeese-UTSA series

I made it out to the opening conference series with UTSA. The Pokes won 6-5 in first game Friday night scoring a run in the bottom of the 9th for the win. The second game was a frustrating one. The Pokes broke on top 2-0 early but allowed UTSA to score a couple of runs due to errors to tie the game. The Pokes strand a good many baserunners as they just couldn't get that timely hit. They ended up losing 5-2 in eleven innings. The game was similar to the first tow games of the Bank One Lake Area Classic. In the third game, which started an hour early to dodge the rain, the Pokes broke out on top early and never looked back. The game ended in the 8th inning when Derek Bordelon hit a two run shot over the left field wall to make the score 13-2 and end the game right then due to the conference 10 run rule. I only took pictures of the second game. Below are links to the pictures I took of the game.

McNeese-ULM series

I made it out to all three of the McNeese-Louisiana Monroe games. At least to some of the games. The first two games were so cold that I finally wimped out before they were over. The Friday night game was a very cold, misty rainy game with ULM jumping out to a lead. McNeese closed it to 5-4 after seven innings but ULM put up three runs in the last two innings for an 8-4 win. Saturday's game was a marathon five hour fifteen inning game that ULM eventually won 6-4. It was very frustrating for McNeese fans as we had the winning run in scoring position in just about most of the extra innings but just couldn't get that timely hit to drive the run in. In the third game, John Doerfler pitched a great complete game and picked up a 2-1 win. In constrast to the Saturday five hour game the Sunday game last about two hours and ten minutes. I only took pictures of the second game. Below are links to the pictures I took of the game.

McNeese-Nicholls series

McNeese played a three game series with Nicholls St. this past weekend. In Game One McNeese blew a 6-4 lead by throwing the ball around in the 8th inning and allowed Nicholls to score three runs and take a 7-6 lead. Tommy Eubanks hit a homerun in bottom of the 9th to extend the game to extra innings. And after McNeese squandered a couple of opportunities to score the winning run in extra innings, Nicholls score five runs in the top of the 11th to go on to a 12-8 win.

In the second game, McNeese got good pitching from both Rusty Begnaud and reliver Lavelle Morgan and broke a 2-2 in the bottom of the 8th inning on a homerun by Dooley Prince to go on to win 4-2.

Chris Denton pitched 8 innings and Josh Hansen closed out the 9th inning as McNeese finally got the bats going to win the third game 11-2 Sunday.

Below are some links to the pictures I took of game two on Saturday.

McNeese-Sam Houston Series

I couldn't make it to the first two games of the series because of prior commitments but I was able to make it out to the third game to get some pictures of the sweep of Sam Houston and the Senior Day Ceremonies before the game. Below are some links to pictures I took Sunday.
